<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>Sunday Nov. 26th
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
80 km Road Race<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
1pm start with wind and no clouds. <P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
The start time temp was said to be 108 F.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
The race rolls off to a very tame start for Caribbean standards. I am so used to the US criterium-style sprint starts in races in Trinidad and Tobago.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
That all comes to a hold when regional big-man Phillip Clarke goes to the front with fellow Bajan Jason Forde to set the pace on fire.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
The two riders take turns cracking the field for about 15 minutes.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
The circuit is up a small hill with tailwind –then around a roundabout and back downhill into the wind. The wind is so strong that attacks can go at anytime and you would feel the same no matter where on the course.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
I get to the front and start to set a fast enough tempo than everyone is sitting on my wheels. The next thing I know, Clarke and Forde are watching each other and I am off alone in the wind.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Now back in my day I fancied myself to be an ok road rider. That was a long time ago.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
I am 36 and weigh about 175 lbs now. Not quite the road time trialist build.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
I set off and keep my effort smooth and steady.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
About three laps later (10 minutes or so) another rider makes a move and catches me.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
We work together for a little while but the other guy clearly doesn’t have the same commitment as I am showing.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Only problems are #1 HEAT, #2 no more water and #3 Clarke, Forde and the rest of the big men behind.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
I decide that I didn’t fly to Barbados after a month of hard training in the gym and numerous workouts up Cheyenne Canyon to give up.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Maybe not the smartest thing—but then I didn’t have the goal to finish an 80 km road race anyway!!

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
The group catches me after about 50 minutes off by myself. I am dehydrated and ready to be gone anyway. A lap after I get caught—my race was certainly over.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
I got dropped and rode back by the finish area half blacking out from the effort in the heat.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Clarke counter attacked when the group caught me.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Two riders went with him—he controlled the race from the breakaway and won in fitting style.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Back to the villa for shower and time to see some nightlife in Barbados!<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
The next day I wondered around doing tourist stuff. Taking some pics of amazing beaches and buying souvenirs.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Thank you all for your support!<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Thanks to all the wonderful people in Barbados. Big up to my Trini Posse (I will see you all in a couple months!!)<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
Thanks to all who have doubted me…
YOU are fuel to the FIRE!Lastly: Thanks to Douglas Lincoln for believing in me and talking me back to cycling at the level I know I can still do.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”><SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Saturday Nov. 25th
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Wake up early and head off to the races. Good thing our van was still packed from the night before’s attempt as we had a fun time trying to fit extra wheels, bikes, food, and gear bags for four riders.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">The velodrome in <SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Barbados<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""> in very nice as compared to others in the <SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Caribbean<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">.
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">500m smooth concrete with 25 degree banking.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">The first event was the 200m TT. I don’t even consider myself a sprinter in local <SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Colorado<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""> races – much less down here.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">My time 13.38 about 2 seconds slower than Colorado State Championships.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">No worry—I can get out of the sun and rest while the big boys do their thing. <P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I was a little sad to see the Elimination and 5km Scratch Races dropped form the<SPAN lang=EN-TT ;="" black="" arial=""> programme<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">—but time had to be make for recovery as this would be an all day track meet.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">My second event was a 1000m Scratch race. A little too short for me—but I know how to ride these on a big track. Stay out of the wind—but keep the pace rolling. When its time to go….GO with everything you have and hope to place well.
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">OK.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">The race goes according to plan—but I didn’t have the juice to hold off some hard-charging West Indian boys.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""> I place 5th.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Next event after a couple hours is similar. 2000m Scratch race.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I line up first and get the pace rolling right away.

I realize that these boys can finish better than I can—so I am very aggressive but smart. Chasing down attacks and getting ready for more. Caribbean Cycling Championship gold medalist Philip Clarke (<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Barbados<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">)
made a very strong move halfway.

I bridge up to him and work a little – but was really trying to save something for a sprint. I have read about Clarke on the internet so I know he is “the goods” as they say.http://www.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2006/oct06/carribean_champs06 <P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>http://www.bvicycling.com/artman/publish/article_172.shtml
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Coming into the bell we have about 300m lead as no one else was able to chase across to Clarke. I sit on out of the wind as we hit the backstretch. At 250m to go—I make my move…FULL GAS! 150m to go we are shoulder to shoulder sprinting it out to the line.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Clarke may be a roadman, but he is still an island boy with a fast finish.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">At the line Clarke gets the win by a half wheel.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">After I catch my breath, I realize that I am back
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I gave everything I had against the Caribbean Cycling Champ and lost by a foot.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">
<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">The other events for the day included a Keirin—which I didn’t make it to the final.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">But my Trinidadian teammate Haseem McLean won the Keirin with Jonathan Rollins in 3rd. <SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">McLean<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""> also won the match sprint over my good friend Ako Kellar (also from T&T).<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black=‘""’ arial="">Time for me to rest and think about how to beat Clarke in the last event for the day.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">10km Scratch Race (Perfect distance for me when I am on form.)<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I sit in the fist half of the race letting Clarke control what he wants to do. Everyone was watching the white guy watch the big man.

<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">With 2km to go—Clarke let an attack from another Barbadian go. Young Quincy Jones placed 3rd in the 2006 Jr. Pan Am Championships in <SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Venezuela<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">. Jones also took Haseem McLean to the line for the Keirin at this event. <P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">If we leave him out in front—he could ride away. If I try to go across I would take Clarke and maybe another rider—that would put me against 4 riders. I could sit and wait for Clarke to make his big move—but then he could be letting his countryman have the win.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">What to do?<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I decide to sit until one lap (500m) to go.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Clarke is marking me and everyone else is watching Clarke as rides away with the win.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I realize we cannot catch Jones – so I hit it as hard as I can with 300m to go.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I lead out the sprint and get to top speed with just inside 200m till the finish.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Clarke and another guy pass me before the line.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I place 4th.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Times like this I really with I would’ve had two other Americans in the race.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">I do really think I could’ve either won it for myself or at least helped someone else.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN black="" arial="" ;"=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Time to pack up and go back to the house. <P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">After a shower, the T&T boys and I head out for some fish.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial="">Long road event in tomorrow – I really don’t plan to do well – but if I could get Clarke to force an early breakaway—I could hold on.<P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
<SPAN ;="" black="" arial=""><P class=MsoNormal style=“FONT-WEIGHT: bold; FONT-FAMILY: arial,helvetica,sans-serif”>
