I work in Kenilworth, about 4.5 miles each way. here's my route on bikely (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/commute12268) I take mostly side streets on my commute but Morris Ave is busy, crowded and the drivers are out for blood- gotta have a little challenge! I use vehicular cycling rules where it's narrow, I'll block the cars so they don't try to skim past, but I avoid any narrow high speed roads because you can't really block cars there.
Lewis Morris had a race a few weekends ago which was fast and fun, it's usually too tame there tho so I mostly ride farther north in the state parks like Allamuchy and Ringwood when I'm not poaching... Cannonball trail is excellent too. Where do you ride and do you commute too? PS- since I started biking to work over a year ago, 2 other people have started too.
I bet Green Mountain is dry..especially after this week (60's -70's). It's a 8 - 10 mile trail (depending on the route you take) with a nice 2 mile switchback climb. Nothing too technical, but all the technical stuff is kinda crappy right now. I'm not sure about any shops that rent 29'ers. I guess just email and call around...
