Out with the single speed, in with the geared bike
Posted by dids642 on July 14, 2007

Recently I had to give up the single speed. It was a harsh ride almost too harsh. I kept the frame and the brakes, and sold everything else to finance the purchase of an XT groupo. I also purchased a Manitou Minute fork.

I must admit that the single speed rigid version was cool, however, the XT version rides like a dream.

I had the Fetish built up as a single speed, rigid ride. I love the frame. The XT groupo is on the same frame...it's an 07 Obsession. I do agree that steel frames offer an exceptional ride, both on and off road.

What frame were are you riding? I did the same with my fixation but in retrospect I think its simply Aluminum is not made for riding rigid unless you are a teenager or just to dumb to feel the difference. Now, steel, is the only way to ride rigid in my opinion. In fact after putting a solid 100 miles on my fixation, rigid, I got on my steel 29er and wondered why I hadn't ridden this more. Now that the fixation has some squish and some gears, it rides much better.
