Professional Mountain Bikers SUCK

What is challenging about the below pictured course? Why do you even need a suspension fork let alone one that costs $1000? I’ve said it since the introduction of MTB to the Olympics and I’ll say it again — professional mountain bikers and the courses they ride on are fucking lame. I’m ecstatic that the US Nationals are coming to Mt. Snow so that all the US pros will suffer and cry some more. They’re already freaking out about it and as they face one of the most hardcore courses in the sport I really hope some reconsider their profession. I remember reading an article about Tom Danielson’s (c/o East Lyme, CT) wife (a pro MTB’er) pissing and moaning about a NORBA course in North Carolina being too difficult. Isn’t that what mountain biking is about? In the mid-90’s Connecticut had the most hardcore local mountain bike series in the country. Jack Rabbit Run in Norwalk, CT was the LARGEST one-day mountain bike race in the WORLD. 13,000 riders and spectators! I was there! And trust me that shit was hard.

I might give racing a big FUCK YOU this year and just ride on my own because even on a local level its not what it once was. Real riding is done with your friends on your local trails when no one else is looking. Real riding becomes legend during the post-ride beer that follows.

Underground races are the only mtb races that are hard anymore. www.singleswizzle.com (SSAZ07) and the Squealer are the hardest races I do all year long and they are both underground. The epics are hard but for different reasons, just because the distances are long like 50 to 100 miles. SSAZ07 was a grueling race. a 10 mile climb on forest roand into some fast singletrack, into a riverbed of rocks... back out for 3 more hours on the AZ trail and the final descending was the hardest Ive seen In a long time. took my eyes off the trail for a second, a baby head twists my front wheel... BAM faceplant into a cactus... this went on for about 5 miles... huge nasty step after step after step. Ofcourse this race is put on by Dejay Birtch so you know its going to be tough. The squealer is also an extremely technical race doing all of national at south mountain. With most of what I see with my local series is that a MTB race course selection seems to be determined by if there is enough parking available?????? Were cyclist so what if we cant take our 30 foot rv. As things become mainstream they get more tame it seems. It really sucks. If I wanted to race road I would go race my road bike. Whining about courses is common. They want them fast and groomed like a bunny slope. I dont know why either? I get more satisfaction out of a slow technical race than a fast non-tech race.

Douglas - High on my bike
From that pic, it does look like you could beat them on 'cross bikes (are they drafting?!? on mountain bikes???). After that pic was taken a couple of old dudes came cruising through that corner on a golf cart complaining that their Tee-time was delayed because of the race being on their course. Maybe a new blog is in order here with pics of all of our gnarliest local trails...

Cheryl - New Jersey, new handlebars
yeah dude, i didn't think that widetrack fireroads was considered mountain biking - that "trail" in the picture looks like something my Sheeba would enjoy.
