Finally

Well I am finnally adding to this blog. Wesley, sorry it has taken so long. I haven’t really been riding much, so I wasn’t sure what to add. Well, I’m still not riding much, but Doug and I did just give his niece and nephew bikes for Christmas. It was really cool. Gabe is 8 and Maggie is 6. They’ve both had smaller bikes with training wheels, but we didn’t put them on either of the new bikes. They were both really excited. Gabe was a little nervous about the prospect of learning to balance without training wheels. Maggie on the other hand had the attitude down. Her first reaction was, “I can balance it!” They couldn’t be more different in some ways. In terms of skill, Gabe should be ready, but like I said before Maggie’s got the attitude. Any suggestions of how to help teach them on the new two-wheelers?

Well now that it’s is the new year and time for resolutions, not only will I be helping the kids ride their bikes, I also have to get out on my bike more. I can’t even use the excuse of weather, because this has been one of the most mild winters we’ve had in a long time. Hopefully it will continue to be mild so I can continue to have no good excuse not to get out on my bike.

Sure fire way to get kids riding without training wheels. Take the training wheels off and find a little grassy hill that they can coast down but won't get alot of speed. Let them coast down without putting their feet on the pedals. Inertia in the rolling wheels will keep the bike upright. Let them do that a few times and then tell them to put their feet on the pedals when they roll down the hill next (perfect for teaching them how to do rollers but that's for later). Lastly, have them try to pedal when they get down to the bottom of the hill - pedal out if you will. I did this with my five year old daughter last summer and now she is riding on her own. It took us about two days. Now she is riding a 25 yr old steel huffy with 20 inch wheels. She is a big girl for her age.

Take them out to a flat grassy field or even nice flat parking lo and give them momentum enough that them can kind of coast and get the feel of the balance. Glad to see you here on the "Bike Geek" website as we were calling it during our ride.
