Hop Brook strikes again. For the second year in a row, Hop Brook has confounded Steppenwolf’s drive train. This has initiated a serious investigation into each involved component. Who is to blame? The list is long. Is it the Spanking new XTR rear derailer, the LX Cogset, the XT crank, the LX front derailer, the previously abused drop-out, or the GODDAMNED Mud? The truth may elude me forever. For now I must live with failure and the dreaded DNF that will haunt my name forever.

The D&S, cracked frame and all, handled the course with ease. Maybe the 2 hours I spent the night before cleaning the drivetrain with a toothbrush was worth it.

The Fixation knows of no such problem. She would've ridden Hop Brook with a zeal unbeknownst to those with riding "over-complicated" machines with derailleurs, cogs and cables to fill with mud.

Steppy is scheduled for a complete overhaul. The Scare will be restuffed and sewn, the tin man stripped and buffed, and the Lions mane shall be washed, combed and re curled. Dorothy will be serviced and Steppy will bear its fangs with new found ardor

I like SRAM chains too. However no equipment was safe from the conditions of this race. My estimate is that 50-60% DNF.

Mud+exposed cables = DNF

D and I rode Gypsy this morning. I'm pretty banged up. My front brake pads are completely gone.

Sounds like you have too many component groups working together. I stick to straight XTR.
