69er gone awry
Posted by hundredairesocialite on January 25, 2008

So hey Fetishizers,

I just finished building up a Fetish obsession as a single speed, rigid, 69er dirt jump/4X racer.

One problem – the frame is too small to run a 29er up front – my foot hits the wheel on turns !

It’s a Small Obsession…

UNGH! Back to the drawing board.

Obviously I am just going to stick a 26" front wheel on for now.

So, what i am wondering is if a small Fixation frame can handle the 69er treatment – Fetish sells the Fix as a 69er, but all the pics i have seen area at least a 17" frame, and really i would prefer to build a 15"… My Gary Fisher is a 17" and it is just too big in the technical stuff for me (i’m 5’ 8").

I see the Top Tube is a lot longer than the Obsession – has anyone built a 15" Fixation 69er ?

Comment if you know anything about running the big wheel up front.

I built a 15" Fixation frame into a cross bike for a small racer. Its was odd for cross racing for throwing on the shoulder but did fit the 700s in front and rear with cross tires. As for a little bigger meats on the rim its hard to say. When I was riding this bike it was not a problem. It was not a problem at all with my 17" fixation (mines the one on the fetish website)

Yeah, I forgot to mention the 650b option and perhaps sliding your clips on your shoes forward a bit to compensate, which might get you 2 inches. Have to check MTBR and see what the latest buzz words for this wheelset combination.

well, i only need about 2 - 3 inches more to have good clearance, and since the Obsession frame has a 16" top tube according to the fetish site, and the small Fixation has a 21.5" top tube, i am hoping that is all I need. unfortuantely, there aren't any black 15" Fixations on ebay right now - i am not so sure about red yet. I'll stick with a 26" for now... I am also looking at 650B wheels.... not sure if the 1 1/2" will be enough though. plus then it would be a 76er, right ?

Ahhh, yes, Toe Overlap. A common problem in the 29er arena, which also applies to 69ers even more so because the frame builder never expected you to put a bigger wheel up front. Actually, I was the first to build a Fetish Fixation as a 69er but I haven't had any toe overlap issues, I think mainly because I have the XL frame. I am not really that tall, but when I am standing next to that pipsqueek Adam, he does have to crane his neck to look up at me!

Leave a comment on Scooby's profile. He's the man behind the Fetish Fixation 69er and would know the answer to your question. DirtDad may also have an idea -- but he's like 7 feet tall and rides a giant frame.
