About

The whole idea is to put together a bike that I can leave anywhere.
Most of the parts are recycled, either from stuff I had lying around or from Papillon Cycles and Bike Club. The wheels are from Bike Island and seem to be a good deal so far.
It’s supposed to be an ugly bike, I think I’ve pulled it off.———

I found the frame on Craigslist for $40. When I finally got there, the guy just gave it to me because he couldn’t get the BB out. The BB is thrashed.
The frame is an 80’s, Panisonic, steel frame with horizontal dropouts.———
The BB is out and I put a different one in. The original one was a mess; just old grease and rust.
I found a cheap set of cranks at Bike Club with a 50T chainring. I switched the ring out for a 44T BMX chainring. It’s white so it kinda matches the frame.

I also got a fork from a guy on CL, $20. It’s a chrome, steel, threadless fork. The stem came from Papillon Cycles, $10 used.
BikeIsland.com has an Aheadset for $25 delivered. I’m using the straight bars from my old Trek MTB and I have a front brake I got from Papillon too.

I got a saddle off a guy on CL the other day for $15. It says WTB but it’s a OE from a GT so it kinda sucks. It’s like a Lazy Boy but still better than the “ass hatchet” I had on before.

I tried the “reflective” spray paint with only fair results.
I did a quick application so I can’t judge it right now.

After riding and commuting on this thing, with a 44/16 fixed set-up, I’ve come to realize that it’s just too much. The hills I have to climb and descend are either too hard on my knees going up, or spinning too fast going down.
I picked up a Shimano 20T freewheel and put it on the other night. I put a new 1/8 in. SRAM chain on too.
Although it’s not as fast as it was, it’s just SO much easier to ride.

This “cheap” bike has become quite the investment. I had hoped to keep the cost down, in case it was stolen, but I believe I now have over $250 put into it.

Well, the reflective paint worked great... until I touched the bike. I think I'd have to put a clear coat over so it doesn't wear off. It seems to be glass spheres suspended in a clear coat but it comes off easy. I ended up putting 3M reflective tape on the rims and head tube for now. I also got a real WTB saddle on there, much better. AND, I've switched to an 18t freewheel.

Nice work, looks solid and fun, and in my opinion, not ugly. Funny how the simple and cheap projects usually turn into more and neither... How did the reflective paint work out? .... ass hatchet... nice, heh heh

Fix it up as a fixie! If I ever get a road bike, that is what I want, only with a flip flop hub.
