I completely tore this bike down after RAAM, cleaned everything and rebuilt it. Also got new carbon handlebars and stem (and cut the steerer down), new pedals, bar-tape, chain, cassette…

Kind of funny that I cut the steer tube with the old bars and everything was perfect. I then noticed that when the areobars broke (at about 25 mph and very unexpectedly by the way) they F’ed up the aluminum right next to the stem. From the looks of it I was lucky they held up at all, and it was definately time for new bars (no more aero-bars though on this bike). I was able to get carbon ones, since I didn’t care if I could put clip-ons on them. But when the new bars came, they had a drop in them between the center and the tops, causing the stance to be a little too extreme. Without and more length left for spacers, I had to flip the stem. I’m not crazy about how it looks with the stem upside down, but it is set up absolutely perfectly so I’m not going to mess with it.

Just two nit-picks really. One isthat the rear break cable lightly rests on the wide shaped part of the top tube. The other is the fact that somehow it takes on water when ridden in the rain (I think in the gap under the seat clamp) and it doesn’t have anywhere to drain it. I pulled out the screw in the cable guide and (no exaggeration) about a cup of water drained out the hole in the bottom bracket. I left the screw out and it has been fine ever since, and the cable guide doesn’t move at all.

It rides like a great bike should (I hardly think about it when I’m out there). I love riding something that few people recognize, and the ones who do know what it is always have something cool to say.

The rear wheel was at a slight angle when seated in the dropouts. I tried another wheel, and several other things to be sure it was the frame. After I sent it back, they said it was thick paint in one of the dropouts. I guess that's possible, but they replaced it anyway. Had to built it twice, but that's okay, I upgraded the BB and a few other things while I was waiting for it to come back.

Had a little trouble with the frame but the Fetish guys took care of it quickly. I admit I was a little worried at first because it is a smaller company, but these guys are great, and stand behind their stuff. I love the bike, I rode it for about 45 minutes the night before the Nightmare to get things dialed in. Then the first real ride was the Nightmare (check my blog for a story about last year's nightmare...). This bike is smoooooth, and it was flawless all day (too bad I wasn't). When I reassembled it I ditched the Sora front derailer, and tried out tubless tires on it just because I had them and thought it would be cool. I ran 185 pounds in my tires, and covered over 140 miles in one day without any discomfort or road vibration. I didn't finish the ride this year, but it had nothing to do with the bike. I am looking forward to putting lots more miles on this thing. The top tube makes it look so unique that it starts a lot of conversations. Very cool to have something that isn't a "mee too" bike, but performs like any other high end bike out there.
